Nigeria's Wrestlers Are Quietly Becoming World Beaters — And Nobody Is Paying Attention

While the Super Eagles dominate the sports headlines, Nigeria's wrestling team has won three world championship medals in 2026. The athletes behind the medals say they train on empty stomachs and broken mats.

Last month, in a packed arena in Budapest, Blessing Oborududu pinned her Mongolian opponent in the final of the 68kg freestyle wrestling category at the World Championships and became a world champion. Back in Nigeria, the moment received approximately three tweets from official government accounts and a brief mention on a sports ticker.

The Super Eagles scored a goal the same week. The celebration lasted three days.

Three Medals, Zero Fanfare

Oborududu's gold was not Nigeria's only wrestling medal in Budapest. Odunayo Adekuoroye won silver in the 57kg category, and Amas Daniel took bronze in the men's 65kg Greco-Roman event. Three medals at a single World Championship is a remarkable achievement for any country. For Nigeria, it was treated as a footnote.

"We win medals for Nigeria and Nigeria does not know our names. The footballers miss a penalty and the whole country is talking about them for a week. I am not bitter. I am just stating facts."

Odunayo Adekuoroye, silver medallist, Budapest 2026

Training on Empty

The conditions under which Nigeria's wrestlers achieve these results would be unimaginable to their counterparts in the United States, Russia, or Japan. The national wrestling centre in Abuja has mats that have not been replaced in seven years. The athletes receive a monthly stipend of ₦45,000 — approximately $28 at current exchange rates — which is supposed to cover food, transport, and personal expenses.

"I eat once a day before major competitions because I need to make weight," one wrestler told The Trojan Beast. "Not because I want to. Because I cannot afford to eat twice." He asked not to be named, fearing repercussions from federation officials.

What Nigeria Could Be

Wrestling experts say Nigeria has the raw talent to dominate African and global wrestling for a generation — if the investment were there. The country produces natural athletes with the physical attributes that elite wrestling demands. What it lacks is funding, coaching infrastructure, and the basic dignity of being taken seriously.

"Give us what the football federation gets for one friendly match. Just one. We will win you ten world medals."

Daniel Igali, former Olympic wrestling champion and coach

Until Nigeria decides that its world champions deserve to be treated like world champions, Blessing Oborududu will keep winning gold medals in empty arenas, and the country will keep celebrating footballers who finish third in tournaments she would have won.
